Medieval Monastery Gardens in Iceland and Norway

2021

Gardening was an important part of the daily duties within several of the religious orders in Europe during the Middle Ages. The rule of Saint Benedict specified that the monastery should, if possible, contain a garden within itself, and before and above all things, special care should be taken of the sick, so that they may be served in very deed, as Christ himself. The cultivation of medicinal and utility plants was important to meet the material needs of the monastic institutions, but no physical garden has yet been found and excavated in either Scandinavia or Iceland. Especially the Cistercians were well known for being pioneer gardeners, but also other orders like the Benedictines and A…

Introduction to Analyzing Digital Discourse: New Insights and Future Directions

2018

In the introduction, we have embedded our overview of the contributions to this volume within a narrative that reviews past and extant research on language and digital communication. We have taken special care to highlight the ways in which each chapter advances the field. In order to do so, we have carefully identified new methodological and empirical insights put forth by the different authors. Specifically, we have highlighted the steps contributors to this volume have taken to help establish the so-called third wave of research, and these steps point to future directions in which to expand the field of language and digital communication.

Determination of periodontopathogens in patients with cri du chat syndrome

2013

Objectives: Cri du chat syndrome is a genetic alteration associated with some oral pathologies. However, it has not been described previously any clinical relationship between the periodontal disease and the syndrome. The purpose of this comparative study was to compare periodontopathogenic flora in a group with Cri du chat syndrome and another without the síndrome, to assess a potential microbiological predisposition to suffer a periodontitis. Study Design: The study compared nineteen subjects with Cri du chat Syndrome with a control group of nineteen patients without it. All patients were clinically evaluated by periodontal probing, valuing the pocket depth, the clinical attachmente level…

Fibred Categories and the Six Functors Formalism

2019

In Section 1, we introduce the basic language used in this book, the so-called premotivic categories and their functoriality. This is an extension of the classical notion of fibered categories. They appear with different categorical structures. In Section2, the language of premotivic categories is specialized to that of triangulated categories and to algebraic geometry. We introduce several axioms of such categories which ultimately will lead to the full six functors formalism. An emphasis is given on the study of the main axioms, with a special care about the so-called localization axiom. Then in Section 3, the general theory of descent is formulated in the language of premotivic model cat…

Digitization and Preservation of Cultural Heritage Products

2017

Cultural heritage encompasses various aspects of a nation's history. Cultural heritage artifacts are considered as priceless items that need special care. Since the wide adoption of new digital technologies, documenting and storing cultural heritage assets became more affordable and reliable. These records are then used in several applications. Researchers saw the opportunity to use digital heritage recordings for long-term preservation. They are considering cultural heritage artifacts as products, and the history behind them as a product lifecycle. In this paper, we present the research progress in cultural heritage digital processing and preservation, highlighting the most impactful advan…

Adsorptionsvoltammetrische Molybdnbestimmung in biologischen Proben nach nassem Hochdruckaufschlu\

1989

The transfer of an (known from literature [141 and till now only applied to seawater) adsorption-voltammetric determination of molybdenum with oxine to biological samples, is described. The herewith accomplished changes of base solution resulted simultaneously in an optimization of the method with regard to interpretability and sensitivity. Special care was taken in the problem of decomposition. Best results are obtained with a high-pressure decomposition. Accuracy of analyses is confirmed with trials of recovery also in the biological matrix.

Pilot applications of internally contracted multireference coupled cluster theory, and how to choose the cluster operator properly.

2011

The internally contracted multireference coupled cluster (icMRCC) method allows a highly accurate description of both static and dynamic correlation with a computational scaling similar to single reference coupled cluster theory. The authors show that the method can lose its orbital invariance and size consistency when no special care is taken in the elimination of redundant excitations. Using the BeH(2) model system, four schemes are compared which differ in their treatment of linear dependencies between excitations of different rank (such as between singles and doubles). While the energy curves agree within tens of μE(h) when truncating the cluster operator at double excitations (icMRCCSD…

Recommendations for a nomenclature system for reporting methylation aberrations in imprinted domains

2018

The analysis of DNA methylation has become routine in the pipeline for diagnosis of imprinting disorders, with many publications reporting aberrant methylation associated with imprinted differentially methylated regions (DMRs). However, comparisons between these studies are routinely hampered by the lack of consistency in reporting sites of methylation evaluated. To avoid confusion surrounding nomenclature, special care is needed to communicate results accurately, especially between scientists and other health care professionals. Within the European Network for Human Congenital Imprinting Disorders we have discussed these issues and designed a nomenclature for naming imprinted DMRs as well …

Dental care in children with Down syndrome : a questionnaire for Belgian dentists

2019

Background To date, research on the opinions of dentists on the oral health care of children with DS (Down Syndrome) is scarce. Material and Methods Evaluate the views and knowledge of Belgium dentists regarding dental care of children with DS. An adequate sample of dentists were invited to fill in a validated questionnaire. Results were assessed in 95% confidence interval with p< 0.05 level. Results A total of 356 questionnaires were returned (177 men, 179 women). Mean age of the dentists was 50.3 years (SD: 11.9) and 75% obtained their degree more than 20 years ago. 72.5% of all dentists replied that they had not been instructed in how to treat children with DS during their dental educati…

Optically Probed Laser-Induced Field-Free Molecular Alignment

2011

Molecular alignment induced by laser fields has been investigated in research laboratories for over two decades. It led to a better understanding of the fundamental processes at play in the interaction of strong laser fields with molecules, and also provided significant contributions to the fields of high harmonic generation, laser spectroscopy, and laser filamentation. In this chapter, we discuss molecular alignment produced under field-free conditions, as resulting from the interaction of a laser pulse of duration shorter than the rotational period of the molecule. The experimental results presented will be confined to the optically probed alignment of linear as well as asymmetric top mol…
